WhatsApp warns free Google Drive backups are not end-to-end encrypted

WhatsApp has notified its users that the end-to-end encryption it offers for messages and media on its application, won't remain so if the information is put away as a backup on Google's servers. "Media and messages you back up aren't ensured by WhatsApp end-to-end encryption while in Google Drive," WhatsApp said in a report on its site.

The express notice comes even as the Facebook-owned company said on August 16 that it has marked a settlement with Google to permit users to store messages on the web company's distributed storage offering - drive, with no standard from November 12. Till now, a WhatsApp user's information could be put away on Google drive yet this was tallied inside the 15 GB free space that a Google account offered.

WhatsApp had also in the past (2017) explained to users that data of the messaging app stored on Google drive is not encrypted. Nonetheless, WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption has been questioned by authorities. Remarkably, the Indian government has approached the informing stage to offer traceability of messages sent on the application. It has reiterated that WhatsApp has not done enough in using technology to trace the origin of rumors spread on the platform that led to violence in several parts of the country.

WhatsApp has affirmed that its messages are encrypted and it can't offer traceability. "As a WhatsApp user you have the decision to not back up your information to Google Drive," said Sai Krishna Kothapalli, an independent security specialist. "They (WhatsApp) are not driving you to backup. It is an element. In this way, if you confide in Google, you can empower it." simultaneously, he included, "if law implementation organizations demand Google for explicit user information, they need to go along."

WhatsApp provides end-to-end encryption, meaning the message a user sends can only be read by the recipient and vice versa. Further, WhatsApp ensures assurance to users from outsiders attempting to listen in on discussions, and even forestalls WhatsApp itself from perusing the messages. While the informing stage itself is encrypted, "for users who decide to backup, the messages are decoded on your telephone and sent to your drive as a backup," Kothapallli stated, including this is the place there could be cause for activity. A mail to WhatsApp looking for extra remarks didn't evoke a reaction on Sunday.
